TRAVEL ITINERARY INDONESIA

4 WEEKS

 SUMATRA - JAVA - BALI

Breadcrumbs Itinerary Indonesia: Java, Sumatra and Bali

DAY 1 : MEDAN

On this day you will arrive in Medan. Take your time to rest, as in this city there are barely any sights. If you want to skip the city all together and move on to Bukit Lawang right away that's possible, but count on a 3-4 hour drive straight from the airport.

DAYS 2 - 5 : BUKIT LAWANG

Bukit Lawang -  also known as the Gates to the Sky - is a tranquil village resting along the river dividing the civilized world and the big jungle of Gunung Leuser. Here you can check in and relax in the river (you might already spot an orang utan that comes to drink water), enjoy a nice meal and prepare for your one or multiple day hike through the lush jungle on the other side of the river.

Gunung Leuser is a national park covering almost 8000 square kilometers and is home to the Indonesian Orang Utan and many other animals. Many travelers take an overnight trek here which is an unforgettable experience.

DAYS 6 - 7 : JAKARTA

Jakarta is often only used as a gate to the rest of Java and there is also not that much to see and do. However, if you have time it's very interesting to walk around Old Batavia, see the national monument, enjoy amazing food, or to learn about the rich history of the Indonesian people. If you're around on August 17th, you can also enjoy the national holiday: Independence Day. The independence was declared in Jakarta on Merdeka Square and it's a big thing. Shout "Merdeka" once and you will surely turn some heads and get into nice conversations with locals.

DAYS 8 - 12 : YOGYAKARTA

Yogyakarta is a place that tends to be difficult to leave. Many backpackers find themselves staying longer than intended as this city has much to offer and its surroundings also lend for great day excursions. Here you can experience a trip to the Prambanan temples, the Borobodur temple or the sunrise on Punthuk Sethumbu. Are you more into nature, then head over to Goa Pindul (in high season this place is flooded with tourists but in dry season you can be all by yourself), the Sri Gethuk waterfalls or a jeep trip to Mount Merapi.

In the town you'll find international cuisines that cater to all your needs, and in the center you'll feel a very cozy and welcoming vibe.

DAYS 13 - 14 : MALANG

We took a night train from Yogya to Malang and did not have time to go into the tea fields near Malang, but if you have time it is a great experience. I've been there years ago with my parents (we visited the Wonosari Tea Plantation) and if you can be there in the early morning the light is beautiful. You can rent a bike to go around the area faster. Do leave the workers alone, you should respect them and not disturb them.

Another cool thing to see is the Jodipan village that was painted in all sorts of colors by students to boost the town and attract tourists.

DAY 15 : TUMPAK SEWU

Tumpak Sewu are possibly the most beautiful waterfalls in Indonesia and with its 120 meters height, also one of the heighest. If you go there around 7 in the morning you'll have the best light, but your experience will be great nonetheless. Read all about visiting this waterfall and how to get the most out of it
