3-4 hours round trip
The trip to Kawah Ijen begins in the middle of the night when you wake up in your accommodation in either Banyuwangi or another town close to the mountain. A car ride in the dark along roads leading through a foggy rain forest brings you all the way up to an even foggier place where you get a strong coffee, put on your headlamps and meet your guide. This is where the 1-2 hour hike begins.

Depending on your speed, the hike can be quite steep and tough at times. You can take as many breaks as you want, but keep in mind that you have to get to the crater rim before sunset to be able to enjoy those vistas. If you want to enter the crater rim to experience the famous "Blue Fire", you will have to be there even earlier.
At dawn, the true beauty of Mount Ijen unfolds. The turquoise-blue crater lake stands in stark contrast to the volcanic landscape, creating a stunning sight that leaves visitors in awe. Vibrant colors and a sea of clouds paint the sky, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that you will never forget.
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW
TRANSPORT
Most people venture to Mount Ijen from either Banyuwangi (Java) or they take a tour starting on Bali. In the latter case you will take a ferry around midnight and continue on a journey by car up to the start of the hike.

TRAVEL TIPS
THE PACKING LIST

-
Appropriate Clothing: Wear comfortable hiking boots with good grip, moisture-wicking clothing, and a lightweight jacket. The temperature can drop significantly at higher altitudes, so layering is key.
-
Headlamp/Flashlight: Since you'll be starting your trek before dawn, a reliable headlamp or flashlight is essential for visibility.
-
Mask: The sulfur gases released by the volcano can be strong and may cause discomfort. Wearing a mask can help protect your respiratory system.
-
Gloves: As you approach the crater, you'll see miners extracting sulfur. If you wish to interact with them or try carrying sulfur yourself, gloves will come in handy.
-
Snacks and Water: Pack energy-boosting snacks and sufficient water to keep you hydrated throughout the trek.
-
Camera Gear: A good camera or smartphone with a capable camera is a must to capture the mesmerizing landscapes, the Blue Fire, and the breathtaking sunrise.
-
First Aid Kit: Carry a basic first aid kit containing essentials like bandages, antiseptic, pain relievers, and any personal medications.
-
Sun Protection: As the sun rises, it's important to protect yourself from its rays. Don't forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

LOCAL GUIDES
Hiring a local guide is recommended. They are experienced in navigating the terrain, are knowledgeable about the area's history and culture, and can enhance your overall experience. More importantly, people in Indonesia and in the area of Kawah Ijen earn a minimum wage and allowing them to help you up the mountain supports them in providing for themselves and their family.
