TRAVEL ITINERARY GUATEMALA

4 WEEKS

Guatemala Itinerary

DAY 1 - 6 : ANTIGUA AND THE ACATENANGO HIKE

Antigua is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is built up almost completely of squared blocks - a grid layout very common in colonial cities. All streets run perpendicular to each other and are easy to navigate. The streets are all made of cobblestone, which add to the aesthetically pleasing surroundings. The low-rise buildings enable views of the volcanoes Agua, Fuego and Acatenango surrounding you, and the colorful facades and red tiled roofs finish the look.

Throughout the city you will find many churches and convents, which exhibit a blend of architectural styles, including Baroque, Renaissance, and Gothic influences. Some notable churches include La Merced, San Francisco, and Santo Domingo. You'll also find preserved ruins of churches and other structures that were damaged by earthquakes. These ruins are a testament to the city's history and its susceptibility to seismic activity. One of the most famous ruins is the Santa Catalina Arch, a picturesque arch over one of the city's streets. The city's preservation efforts have helped maintain its unique character, making it a captivating destination for travelers interested in history and architecture.

Antigua

The food here is, if you ask me, among the best in Central America and the people are among the nicest I have met during my travels. If you're able to visit during Semana Santa, you're in for an even more inspiring experience. Semana Santa in Antigua is marked by grand processions that make their way through the city's cobblestone streets. These processions involve intricately designed floats, or "andas," carried by devoted local residents. These andas depict scenes from the Passion of Christ and are adorned with fresh flowers and candles. Throughout the whole city the streets are decorated with carpets made from colored sawdust. Witnessing these processions is a truly awe-inspiring experience, with a blend of colors, fragrances and music.

If you're fit enough, leave your bags at your hostel or hotel, and join a group hike up mount Acatenango. It's a two day, very strenuous hike but one of the best experiences you can have in your lifetime. Read all about it

DAY 7 : SANTA CATARINA PALOPO

Santa Catarina Palopó is a picturesque village on the northern shore of Lake Atitlán, known for its authenticity, indigenous traditions, and stunning lakeside setting. It's a town painted blue and turquoise and the streets are made of cobblestone. Santa Catarina Palopó is not as commercialized as some of the larger towns on the lake, contributing to its authentic and unspoiled atmosphere. Visitors can explore the local market, where vendors sell fresh produce, handmade crafts, and traditional goods. The town's slower pace invites travelers to unwind and appreciate the natural beauty of Lake Atitlán without the distractions of a bustling tourist scene. Because of it not being commercialized, this is one of the poorest towns across the lake, and you will not find many restaurants or hotels. You can however provide the villagers with some income by purchasing your souvenirs or drinks here. We had a great, calm stay there and enjoyed a delicious cappucino at Café Tuk!

DAYS 8 - 10 : PANAJACHEL

Panajachel, often referred to as "Pana," is the bustling gateway to Lake Atitlán and stands out as the largest and most commercially developed town on the lake's shores. Panajachel's waterfront is a bustling promenade filled with a mix of street vendors, artisans, and shops offering a variety of crafts, textiles, and souvenirs. The town serves as a central hub for transportation, making it a convenient starting point for exploring other lakeside villages. Ferries and shuttles depart regularly from Panajachel, providing access to different towns around Lake Atitlán.

DAYS 10 - 13 : SAN JUAN & SAN PEDRO LA LAGUNA

Away from the hustle and bustle of its livelier neighbors, the charming town of San Juan la Laguna offers a laid-back experience with stunning views of the lake and surrounding hills. As you stroll through its cobblestone streets, you'll feel the genuine warmth of the indigenous Tz'utujil community, who proudly preserve their traditions and create vibrant textiles that tell stories of their rich cultural heritage. The town's artsy vibe adds to its allure, with local galleries showcasing a mix of traditional and contemporary creations, making it a haven for artists and art enthusiasts alike.

San Pedro la Laguna on the other end provides a more vibrant and energetic contrast to the tranquility of San Juan de la Laguna. Known for its lively atmosphere, San Pedro is a popular destination for backpackers, adventure seekers, and those looking for a more bustling experience. In San Pedro, the streets buzz with activity as locals and visitors alike explore the eclectic mix of cafes, restaurants, and shops. The town has a reputation for its nightlife, with various bars offering a lively scene for those who enjoy socializing and meeting fellow travelers. The energetic ambiance is complemented by the stunning backdrop of Lake Atitlán and the surrounding volcanoes.

DAYS 13 - 15 : LANQUIN

Semuc Champey, Guatemala

Lanquin is situated in the heart of the Guatemalan jungle, and is the starting point for tours to Semuc Champey. Lanquin itself is a small village surrounded by tropical vegetation, offering a more rustic and off-the-beaten-path experience. The community predominantly comprises Q'eqchi' Maya people, and visitors can witness and participate in traditional ceremonies, sample local cuisine, and explore the vibrant markets showcasing indigenous crafts and textiles.

Semuc Champey is renowned for its terraced limestone pools and turquoise waters. The journey to Semuc Champey involves navigating through dense jungle, crossing rivers, and culminates in the breathtaking view of these cascading pools, providing an idyllic spot for swimming and relaxation.

The adventurous town is a base for activities such as cave exploration, river tubing, and hiking in the nearby mountains. The Kan'ba Caves, with their underground chambers and river passages, offer a unique caving experience for those seeking an adrenaline rush.

DAYS 15 - 19 : FLORES

Tikal
Flores, Guatemala

Flores, a charming island town situated on Lake Petén Itzá in the northern region of Guatemala, is a captivating destination that combines history, culture, and natural beauty. Linked to the mainland by a causeway, Flores serves as a gateway to the ancient Maya city of Tikal and offers a delightful blend of colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and a relaxed lakeside atmosphere.

DAYS 20 - 21 : RIO DULCE

Rio Dulce, translating to "Sweet River" in Spanish, connects Lake Izabal to the Caribbean Sea, creating a picturesque route flanked by mangroves, vibrant birdlife, and occasional glimpses of traditional wooden boats known as "lanchas."

One of the prominent attractions along the Rio Dulce is the Livingston, a Garifuna town located at the river's mouth. The Garifuna people, with their Afro-Caribbean roots, contribute to the cultural diversity of the region, offering visitors a chance to experience their unique music, dance, and cuisine. Personally I did not enjoy Livingston, and think it's a bit over exagerated in most blogs. However, if you want to experience the Carribean feeling, you can get a glimpse here.

The Castillo de San Felipe de Lara, a Spanish colonial fortress, stands as a historical landmark on the shores of Lake Izabal. This well-preserved fortification once served to protect against pirate attacks and provides insight into the region's colonial past.
